ruckload carrier Werner Enterprises Inc. said late Monday its net income for the second quarter grew 17% to $25.3 million or 31 cents a share, up from $21.6 million or 27 cents a year earlier.

The company reported its operating revenue rose 18% to $485.8 million.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Clarence Werner cited “solid freight demand” in a statement, though the company cited several “inflationary cost pressures that are impacting truckload carriers, including driver pay, rising fuel costs, new truck engine emission costs, tolls and other costs.”

Fuel costs excluding taxes rose for an eighth straight quarter, averaging 51 cents a gallon higher than the second quarter of last year, the company said. Fuel prices in the second quarter were also 19 cents above the first quarter, Werner said.
