al-Mart Stores, as part of an initiative that the company says could cut costs by $3.4 billion, announced Friday it will seek to reduce packaging by its suppliers by 5%, the Associated Press reported.

Wal-Mart said it will begin working with its suppliers in November to prepare for the changes, which will take effect in 2008, AP said.

Wal-Mart said its efforts will remove the equivalent of 213,000 trucks from the road each year and prevent the consumption of up to 6.7 million gallons of diesel, AP reported.

Wal-Mart is ranked No. 2 on the Transport Topics 100 list of the largest private carriers in the United States and Canada.
