ruck maker Volvo AB said Friday it will lay off about 600 workers at its North American powertrain facility in Hagerstown, Md., during the first half of 2007.

The layoffs are related to an anticipated decline in truck demand stemming from the Environmental Protection Agency’s stricter 2007 emission standards, which go into effect Jan. 1, Volvo said in a statement.

Volvo’s Hagerstown facility currently employs about 1,770 people.
