U.S. Seeks Ways to Safely Transport Radioactive Waste to Yucca Mountain

With President Bush’s approval in February of Yucca Mountain in Nevada as the nation’s permanent disposal site for spent nuclear fuel rods, the battle is now joined over how the material will be transported to the underground repository, scheduled to begin operation in 2010.

If the Department of Energy has its way, between 80% and 90% of the spent nuclear fuel will be carried by rail, said DOE spokesman Joe Davis.

But for the small number of motor carriers that transport radioactive materials for the government — perhaps not more than a half dozen — relocating even a portion of the waste to Yucca Mountain could be a substantial opportunity.
