day after announcing it would close an air freight hub in Ohio, UPS Inc. said Friday it would integrate the heavy freight handled by that facility into an $82.5 million expansion of its Louisville, Ky., air cargo operations.

The 700,000-square-foot heavy freight facility will add 720 new jobs to Louisville, UPS said, starting with 120 full-time and 600 part-time positions.

The company said Thursday the closure of its Dayton, Ohio, air freight hub in mid-2006 would cost about 1,400 jobs.

UPS had acquired the Dayton hub when it bought Menlo Worldwide Forwarding from CNF Inc. in December.

UPS said in a statement it had considered moving the operations to several other states but a decision Thursday by the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority to extend tax incentives to the company helped bring the operation to Louisville.

The authority approved up to $20 million in incentives to attract at least 400 new full-time jobs over the next 10 years, UPS said.

The expansion would allow UPS to offer international and North American overnight, expedited, second-day and deferred air freight services through the hub, the company said.

UPS is ranked No. 1 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
