AN FRANCISCO — The U.S. petroleum industry may be unable to deliver to all parts of the nation diesel fuel with low enough sulfur content to meet new federal pollution rules, industry executives told a fuels conference here.
The delivery problems would occur even if diesel fuel produced at the nation’s refineries contains far less sulfur than the federal standard, they said, and could extend beyond an initial transition period.
Pipeline executives said the sulfur-contamination problem would recur each time the pipeline is used to deliver other products, such as jet fuel or off-highway diesel, which contain more sulfur.
