Japanese Co. Unveils Cell Phone Technology

In Japan, NTT DoCoMo recently launched its pioneering third-generation (3G) mobile phone service FOMA (Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access).

Although DoCoMo says there are still a number of technical problems with FOMA that need to be ironed out, the new service is still miles ahead of similar services in other countries. In Europe, for example, second-generation wireless application protocol (WAP) services are still struggling to take off, while the United States is even further behind.

Unlike 2G systems, like i-mode in Japan and WAP in Europe, 3G offers rapid data transmission speeds that are very well suited for video and audio streaming. DoCoMo has been able to launch its new 3G service because of its earlier phenomenal success with i-mode. DoCoMo intends to spend approximately 17 billion British pounds over the next three years expanding its FOMA service in Japan. The Japanese company is hoping to introduce its 3G service in the United Kingdom at the end of 2002. Guardian Unlimited (UK) (10/11/01)

Mitsubishi Upgrades Delivery Tracking System

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America (MMSA) has improved its Order to Delivery (OTD) system by developing an Order Management System (OMS), which gives car dealers constant updates on the status of their ordered vehicles, from when it is built to when it arrives on the lot.

OMS, which runs on an Oracle database and utilizes information from the OTD system, gives dealers the ability to change shipping and production schedules in order to send more cars to dealers who need them. The older OTD system was created to replace the "push" production system, which pushed cars onto dealers who could not handle them, consequently, leaving cars on dealer lots for over 160 days.
