Exel Selects GT Nexus Solution
GT Nexus has been chosen by Exel to be its solution provider for a Web-technology initiative to streamline transaction processes and improve logistics information quality and timeliness for Exel's global seafreight operations.During the first phase of the initiative, Exel plans to install GT Nexus shipment execution applications at three of its major ocean services operating stations--Cleveland, Frankfurt, Germany and Hong Kong. Bluetooth Vendors Promise Convenient Communications
Participants at the Bluetooth Developers Conference demonstrated a wide array of products that promise easy-to-use, energy-efficient and cost-effective low-speed wireless communications.Visteon showcased a Bluetooth network connected to an automobile audio system that allows drivers to make calls on cell phones without a phone cradle. Car manufacturers want the option to be available as early as 2002. The Context-Aware Messaging Platform (CAMP) from Philips can transmit data to users depending on where they are, who they are, and what they are doing. Meanwhile, a pair of Toshiba personal digital assistants (PDAs) connected to an ad hoc Bluetooth network are capable of sending and receiving instant messages, as demonstrated by Toshiba Product Manager Duc Dang.
The PDAs feature a Secure Digital Bluetooth module designed to complement handhelds debuting in the United States in a few weeks; the modules themselves should be available in the first quarter of 2002. Roving Networks highlighted a Bluetooth technology that turns PDAs into universal remotes for certain home appliances. IDG News Service (12/13/01); Lawson, Stephen
Autoliv Selects SupplySolutions
Autoliv, the leading manufacturer of vehicle safety restraint technology worldwide, selected SupplySolution's hosted i-Supply Service to improve communications with its supplier base. The company conducted tests of the new system involving its six best and six worst supply vendors.According to Autoliv's information services manager, Rodger Hurst, the technology eliminated the need to contact vendors via fax or telephones and cut premium freight costs for its Midwest plants by 92%. In addition, he notes the system reduced inventory levels by 32%. The improved communications helps inventory managers ensure product supplies are sufficient to meet demand. Technology start-ups, such as SupplySolution, offers customers more interaction with top executives when selecting the solution best fitting the company's needs.
For instance, top executives with Union Pacific worked closely with Arzoon's management team before choosing one of its supply chain logistics applications. Computerworld (12/10/01) Vol. 35, No. 48, P. 39; Hall, Mark
