Scott Parker, a company driver for Contract Freighters Inc., runs a paperless office from his cab with supplemental services like TripPak Express and Internet access available at the truck stops he frequents.
All of his records — his logbooks, receipts for taxes, ex-pense sheets and other paperwork — are scanned into his laptop computer and stored so he can access and print every entry.
Obtaining Internet access and the ability to send and receive e-mail is still tough, though, the veteran driver said.
“There are about three places in the country where I can log on with no trouble — our headquarters in Joplin, [Mo.], a truck stop in West Memphis, Ark., and at my home. My service doesn’t have an 800 number, so if I want to connect, I have to go to a pay phone and use a calling card.”
