Texas Rest Areas to Be Built With Historical Framework

Plans for the 93 Texas rest areas slated for construction or renovation include not only additional truck parking, increased safety and enhanced amenities. State Department of Transportation officials want them more interesting and are using thematic designs to reach that goal.

A particular area’s history, natural features and native materials are considered when designing the 26 new and renovating the 67 existing rest areas. One new pair about 50 miles east of Amarillo on Interstate 40 features a Route 66 art deco theme accessible from the eastbound lanes, which run along a 178-mile stretch of the original Route 66.

A pioneer dugout theme that utilizes native stone and has one building partly underground in a sloping hillside is under construction on the westbound side.
