The Teamsters union said its carhaul members voted to reject a proposed three-year contract with automobile carriers.
The proposed national contract was rejected by 2,939 to 2,076, and all three supplements were also rejected by rank-and-file members, the union said.
The Teamsters agreed in June to a contract with carhaulers, but the deal still has to be approved by voting union members.
“The proposed agreement eliminated various restrictions so that our contracted employers could haul more cars, thereby providing additional job opportunities to our members and protecting their job security,” said Fred Zuckerman, the Teamsters carhaul division director.
“We will get our members’ input on the issues that concern them. We understand that our members are worried and angry about the difficult economic conditions facing the auto and carhaul industries [and] we hope to resolve this contract without going on strike,” he said in a statement on the Teamsters’ Web site.
