Teamsters Carhaul Drivers Vote to Reject Contract

Teamsters carhaulers overwhelmingly rejected a tentative agreement covering about 6,000 workers, sending management and union negotiators back to the bargaining table.

The union leadership didn’t disclose the specific results of the balloting, but the Teamsters for a Democratic Union website showed vote totals that recorded 87% against the tentative deal.

Teamsters haul vehicles for Jack Cooper Holdings and Cassens Transport, which rank Nos. 43 and 74, respectively, on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada.

A statement posted by the union said negotiators “will reconvene and continue to negotiate on the members’ behalf. In the interim, all carhaulers should continue to work as usual.”

Last month, the Teamsters announced a tentative contract agreement had been reached. The Teamsters National Automobile Transporters Industry negotiating committee didn’t disclose any details, including the length or terms of the deal.

The tentative agreement was announced just after the Aug. 31 expiration of the previous contract.
