Con-way Inc. said the Teamsters canceled an Orlando, Florida, representation election at its freight unit just before balloting could begin.

The company, which ranks No. 4 on the Transport Topics list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers, has won five of eight election battles with the union. Previously, a California election also was canceled.

Over the past five months, the union has sought to organize workers at Con-way Freight, the third-largest less-than-truckload carrier, as well as FedEx Corp.’s Freight LTL unit. The organizing effort so far has succeeded in winning representation at about 1% of the LTL terminals at each company.

FedEx Freight, part of No. 2 FedEx Corp., also has defeated the union five times in eight votes. Several FedEx Freight elections also have been canceled.

Con-way Freight President Greg Lehmkuhl said the Orlando move “reflects the realization by the Teamsters that our employees in Orlando understand the value of what they have today and recognize the advantages and opportunities they have in being union-free.”
