Drug and alcohol use among truck drivers dropped slightly in 2001 from 2000 levels, but the decrease was insufficient to change the percentage of drivers who carriers must test for illegal drugs each year, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said last week.

In 2001, tests showed the usage rate for drugs was 1.5% and the alcohol rate was 0.1%, according to the recent FMCSA report. The rates for drug and alcohol usage in 2000 were 2% and 0.2%, respectively.

FMCSA requires that motor carriers annually test 10% of their drivers for alcohol use and 50% for illegal drug use. The drug test requirement can drop to 25% if the industry survey shows a positive test rate of less than 1% for two years in a row.
