Shippers, Freight Brokers Add Shipment Tracking Capabilities

Shippers and third-party logistics firms continue to add tracking capabilities to monitor freight shipments.

The Kraft Heinz Co. selected FourKites to provide load status and predicted arrival times for goods moving by truck, rail and parcel carriers throughout its supply chain.

“It is critical that our products are delivered on time and transported at the right temperatures,” said Larry Breisinger, head of transportation in North America for The Kraft Heinz Co. in Chicago.

“We will use FourKites to gain unprecedented visibility into when each shipment will arrive, and be able to pro-actively monitor load temperatures to ensure high quality.”

FourKites uses links to more than 4 million electronic devices to track shipment location and temperature and uses a predictive algorithm to calculate shipment arrival times.

Coyote Logistics, a freight brokerage firm owned by UPS Inc., said it has deployed the Descartes MacroPoint system to track shipments handled by its network of truckload, less-than-truckload and intermodal carriers.

“Coyote is committed to providing a seamless experience to both shippers and carriers,” said Jim Sharman, chief operating officer for Coyote in Chicago. “Real-time shipment visibility and connectivity is a critical component of that experience.”

Coyote provides brokerage and transportation management services to more than 14,000 shippers.

MacroPoint provides load tracking through drivers’ phones and electronic logging devices. Descartes Systems Group, a software company based in Waterloo, Ontario, acquired Cleveland-based MacroPoint in August.
