Bush Seeking $75 Billion for War, Security

President Bush sent a request to Congress for $75 billion to fund the first six months of the war in Iraq and to secure the U.S. homeland during this period of heightened security alert, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday.

Specifically, the request is for $62.6 billion for the Department of Defense, $8 billion to rebuild Iraq and $4 billion to tighten security at border crossings, bridges and transportation networks, Bloomberg said.

The supplemental budget request is expected to affect debate on the 2004 budget and other spending measures currently before Congress, Bloomberg said.

If the full measure is funded, along with the budget as currently constructed, it will increase the federal deficit to nearly $400 billion, far exceeding the record $290 billion deficit the country ran in 1992, Bloomberg said. Transport Topics
