Secretary Mineta to Remain at DOT

orman Mineta, the Secretary of Transportation, will stay in President Bush’s Cabinet, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Thursday.

McClellan also said Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, Interior Secretary Gale Norton and Alphonso Jackson, secretary of Housing and Urban Development will also remain for a second term.

In 2000, Mineta became commerce secretary after he was nominated by President Clinton. After being elected, Bush them nominated Mineta to his current post.



Mineta was a 21-year Democratic congressman from California, and rose to become chairman of the House Public Works and Transportation Committee in 1993. He resigned in 1995 to be a senior executive at defense contractor Lockheed Martin.

Nine members of Bush's 15-member Cabinet have resigned since the president won re-election. Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi on Wednesday said he would resign.

The White House on Thursday nominated Jim Nicholson to replace Principi.
