alifornia Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) vetoed on Friday a bill that would have imposed a shipping fee on containers passing through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The legislation, introduced by Democratic state senator Alan Lowenthal would have imposed a fee of $60 per container to help fund security, air quality and transportation initiatives at the ports, the Times said.

In his veto, Schwarzenegger said the container fee could hurt U.S. exports and criticized the bill’s lack of provisions for public-private partnerships that could help bolster port and transportation funding, the Times reported.
