Roadrunner Transportation Systems continued its strategic focus on acquisitions by acquiring logistics firm Unitrans International Corp. for $55.5 million.

Los Angeles-based Unitrans specializes in international ocean and air freight management, and customs brokerage. Its specialties include cold-chain and high-value cargo, Roadrunner said late March 14.

Roadrunner, Cudahy, Wis., has made more than 20 acquisitions in four years since its shares became publicly traded, spanning truckload, intermodal, brokerage and other logistics services.

“The addition of Unitrans diversifies and expands our existing global supply chain solution and brings a well-run company with a proven track record of high service quality to Roadrunner.” said Roadrunner CEO Mark DiBlasi.

Unitrans’ top management, CEO Andrew Schadegg and Executive Vice President Chris Amberg, will remain with the company, which had annual revenue of about $84 million last year.

Roadrunner is ranked No. 24 on Transport Topics Top 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
