n a switch from previous years, online retailers are cutting back on the perk to shoppers of free holiday shipping, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Some retailers are cutting the perk altogether while others are raising the threshold level of purchases for giving free shipping, the paper said.

Because Christmas is on a Monday this year, the deadlines for last-minutes shipping — even more expensive overnight delivery — are Wednesday, Dec. 20, or Thursday, Dec. 21, the Journal said.

Last year many retailers offered more liberal free shipping deals following the tolls on consumer confidence taken by the big hurricanes and the Iraq war, the Journal reported.
