Railroads Join EPA's SmartWay Emissions-Reduction Program

he major North American freight railroads joined the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay partnership, which is aimed at reducing emissions across industry, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday.

The agreement was announced Wednesday night at the U.S. Capitol building by Jeffrey Holmstead, assistant administrator of EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.

“The rail companies joining the SmartWay partnership are helping to clean the air, improve our nation’s energy security, and continue to ensure the strength of the U.S. economy," Holmstead said.



The railroads are BNSF Railway Co., Canadian Pacific Railway Co., Canadian National Railway Co., CSX Transportation Inc., Kansas City Southern Railway, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.

martWay is a voluntary partnership that establishes incentives for fuel efficiency improvements and greenhouse gas emissions.

By 2012, it aims to reduce annual fuel consumption by as much as 150 million barrels of oil and emissions by as much as 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide.
