he Vancouver (British Columbia)Port Authority Friday said it will implement new, stricter policies for trucking companies hauling containers to and from the Port of Vancouver, including a new licensing agreement that will require truckers to certify their compliance to the port’s strategic trucking program.

The program includes new provisions that allow for the investigation, inspec-tion and auditing of company records to ensure compliance with the port’s new initiative, the Vancouver Port Authority said in a statement.

Truckers’ existing licenses will be valid until Jan. 15, the port authority said, after which trucking companies must secure a new license.

The port authority also noted it will only accept applications for new li-censes from companies transporting containers to and from the lower mainland ports using company-owned equipment and employee drivers.

"The VPA's new licence agreement will give our port a greater role in ensuring that trucking companies comply with the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that was developed by Vince Ready in the aftermath of the 2005 container trucking dispute," said Gordon Houston, chief executive officer of the Vancouver Port Authority.

The port authority added that all trucking companies applying for a license must supply a signed copy of the MOA.
