The state agency approved the spending for the project last month, with construction scheduled to begin in January.
After completion later in the year, the ports’ intermodal facilities, where containers are transferred directly between ships and trains, will have nearly nine miles of rail track.
CSX and Norfolk Southern provide the rail portions of intermodal service. The changes will allow trains to pull through the facility instead of having to make a time-consuming backup move to serve it.
“Our two intermodal rail facilities allow rapid unloading and reloading — and prevent the need for truck hauling from remote rail yards to the port,” said Curtis Foltz, executive director. “This expansion is part of a continual effort to improve our facility and increase efficiency.”
