Police Probe Ariz. Truck-Train Crash

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Police are investigating a collision downtown between a freight train and a tractor-trailer.

The truck about 9 p.m. Friday had pulled up to the crossing and was waiting when it was hit by a westbound Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train. The force of the crash drove the big-rig into a car and pickup truck also stopped at the railroad intersection.

Drivers in the two smaller vehicles were taken to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment with minor injuries and later released. The truck driver and the train's crew weren't hurt, said Officer Gene Harris.

One witness said the truck had pulled across the tracks because the warning signals and barriers weren't working properly, Phoenix television station KTVK reported Saturday.

But Harris said the crossing gates and lights "appeared to be in working order" and the gates were down. He said there are posted signs warning motorists.

The driver of the truck, Joshua Bey of Philadelphia, was cited for failure to obey a traffic-control device, Harris said.

Cleanup crews spent hours picking up the spilled produce from the trailer. "Grapes were everywhere," Harris said.
