Oberstar Criticizes NTSB on I-35W Bridge

Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.), chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, last week criticized the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board for suggesting a design flaw was a key factor in the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis.

NTSB released preliminary findings implicating a design flaw with the bridge’s gusset plates for the Aug. 1 collapse.

Oberstar said NTSB Chairman Mark Rosenker should not have made that statement while the investigation continues. Rosenker has stressed that the final cause of the collapse is still unknown.

“This is really, if not dynamite information, very intriguing, and opens a new avenue of inquiry and shows a rush to judgment on the part of the chairman of the [NTSB],” Oberstar said.
