Obama’s NHTSA Pick Withdraws

Chuck Hurley, who President Obama had intended to nominate to head the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has withdrawn from the nomination process, the Associated Press reported.

The White House said in April that it would nominate Hurley, chief executive officer of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, to be the administrator of NHTSA.

Environmental groups had questioned Hurley’s commitment to fuel efficiency requirements and had expressed concerns over his ties to automakers, AP said Tuesday.

NHTSA oversees highway safety programs and sets automotive fuel efficiency and safety requirements.
