NTSB Removes Truck Black Boxes From its ‘Most Wanted’ Safety List

The National Transportation Safety Board removed a recommendation for crash-recording "black boxes" on trucks from its list of "Most Wanted" safety actions and renewed its call for tighter medical evaluations of commercial vehicle drivers.

The board took the actions May 14 at a public meeting in Washington.

NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway said the fact that the board removed accident recording devices from its high-priority list was not an indication that members no longer want them in trucks.

Instead, he said, the board felt that since the industry refused to act on the 1998 recommendation, it had nothing new to say on the issue.
