Norfolk Southern’s 4Q Profit Improves

Norfolk Southern Corp. said its fourth-quarter profit rose 13% on higher shipping costs, though its intermodal business declined.

The Eastern freight railroad earned $452 million, or $1.21 per share, compared with $399 million, or $1.02, a year earlier. Revenue rose 2% to $2.5 billion, NS said late Tuesday.

Intermodal revenue fell 3% to $480 million, while coal shipment revenue jumped 33% to $798 million on increased shipments and higher prices, the rail line said.
