astern freight railroad Norfolk Southern Corp. reported Tuesday it earned $194 million or 47 cents a share, a 23% rise from last year’s $158 million or 40 cents.
Its railway operating revenue of $1.96 billion was the highest in its history and was 16% over last year, the company said in a statement. Traffic rose 6%.
Intermodal revenue also set a first-quarter record of $408 million, 24% over the same period last year. The railroad said it was the fifth straight quarter in which intermodal showed double-digit growth.
The quarter’s results also included $35 million in pretax expenses related to a derailment in Graniteville, S.C., Norfolk Southern said.
