NITL, Nasstrac Seek Leaders As Industry Faces Challenges

img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>The two largest U.S. shipper organizations find themselves with most of their top executive positions vacant, just as the freight transportation industry is facing explosive fuel costs, a murky economic outlook and a host of legislation on Capitol Hill.

Three of the top four executives at the National Industrial Transportation League have either resigned or been let go this year. Meanwhile, the National Small Shipments Traffic Conference has been operating without an executive director, its top paid position, for almost six months.

Yet while the NIT League and Nasstrac search for new leadership, they are also struggling to redefine their role for fiscally conscious members who have been facing increased operating costs amid a weak economy.



“Organizations like [us] have to step back and evaluate our value-add to members,” said Nasstrac President Terri Ferraro, whose position is part-time and uncompensated. “We’re trying to make membership a no-brainer.”
