N.C. Highway Use Tax Hike Fails to Pass

North Carolina legislators have adjourned without passing a proposed increase in the state’s highway use tax, the Truck Rental and Leasing Association said.

The proposal could have doubled the use tax from its current rate of 3% of a vehicle’s retail value to 6%, Trala said in a statement.

In addition, the association said legislators were exploring the possibility of eliminating or raising the current cap on the highway use tax, which is currently set at $1,000 for trucks weighing more than 26,000 pounds.
