The group representing truck stop operators nationwide will engage with industry partners in a series of working groups to determine how to enhance parking availability for truckers, the group’s spokeswoman indicated this week.

“The more successful the truckstop industry is, the better it is for all who are interested in resolving any truck parking concerns,” Tiffany Wlazlowski Neuman, National Association of Truck Stop Operators’ vice president of public affairs, told Transport Topics on Dec. 19.

“It costs a lot of time, resources and money to create, maintain and expand truck parking capacity. Nobody is better at doing this more efficiently and effectively than NATSO’s membership,” she said.

Last week, the National Coalition on Truck Parking established four working groups to research concerns over parking capacity, technology, funding and regulations in 2017. Wlazlowski Neuman noted the coalition recognizes the private sector provides nearly 90% of truck parking.

“Our members have firsthand experience with truck parking obstacles that arise at the local level, such as zoning restrictions or citizen opposition. We are in a key position to help shape plans for addressing these and similar types of issues that can restrict our members from expanding truck parking capacity,” Wlazlowski Neuman added.

Earlier this year, the NATSO Foundation, with American Trucking Associations and the American Transportation Research Institute, launched the “Park My Truck” smartphone app to assist truckers.

A shortage of truck parking nationwide is the fourth issue on ATRI’s top 10 concerns before the trucking industry in 2016.
