Nafta Surface Trade Rose 7.2% in June

urface trade among the U.S., Canada and Mexico rose 7.2% in June to $59.4 billion from a year earlier, the Department of Transportation reported late Monday.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90% of U.S. trade by value with North American Free Trade Agreement partners Canada and Mexico moves by land.

June U.S. imports by truck rose 3.9% over June 2004 to $22.3 billion, while exports increased 10.4% to $20.4 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics said in its monthly report.



Rail imports fell 5.9% to $6.5 billion year-over-year, while exports jumped 14.1% to $2.8 billion.

Pipeline imports rose 19.6% to $3.8 billion while exports jumped 57.6% to $184 million, BTS said.
