urface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico rose 10.2% in August compared with a year earlier, the Department of Transportation reported Monday.
August trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners included a 7.2% jump in U.S.-Canada trade and an 16% gain in U.S.-Mexico trade, DOT said in its monthly report.
August U.S. imports by truck rose 8.5% from a year earlier to $24.1 billion, while truck exports gained 10.3% to $22.6 billion.
Rail imports rose 12% to $7.6 billion year-over-year, while exports gained 22.8% to $3.5 billion.
Pipeline imports jumped 10.1% to $4.8 billion, while exports rose 10.5% to $175 million, DOT said.
Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90% of U.S. trade among Nafta partners moves by land.
