ichigan and the Canadian province of Ontario have signed an agreement aimed at improving safety and keeping traffic moving across the busy Windsor-Detroit border crossing, the Associated Press reported.
The Ontario provincial government said the agreement marks the first time the two countries have shared “Intelligent Transportation Technology,” AP said.
Ontario’s transportation minister, Donna Cansfield, and Kirk Steudle, director of the Michigan Department of Transportation, signed the agreement Friday morning in Windsor, Ontario, AP reported.
The system will allow officials in both countries to better monitor traffic, weather and road conditions via closed-circuit television, AP reported.
It will also allow officials to respond more quickly to problems and provide real-time information to travelers to help them better plan their trips, AP said.
More than 42,000 commuters, tourists and trucks carrying hundreds of millions of dollars worth of goods cross the border on a daily basis.
