he Michigan House voted 94-12 to allow trucks that weigh 10,000 pounds and tractors-trailers to drive at 60 mph instead of the current 55 mph on highways where the maximum speed limit is 70, the Associated Press reported.
The bill next goes to the Senate.
State Rep. Bruce Caswell sponsored the legislation to bridge the gap between slower and faster drivers, which will make it safer for all vehicles on the road. On average, most trucks travel 67 mph or more, he said, AP reported.
“By bringing all drivers into the same speed range, we will not only have better traffic flow and help ease congestion, it will also help our police officers with enforcement,” Caswell said in a written statement.
The legislation requires truck drivers to drive at a “careful and prudent speed,” AP said.
