The comment period on a McKee Foods Transportation application for an hours-of-service waiver ended June 11 with 12 comments filed, total, including one from American Trucking Associations in favor.

Based in Collegedale, Tennessee, McKee produces baked goods, including Little Debbie snacks. The company asked the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for permission to alter sleeper berth times for its team drivers operating heavy-duty rigs.

In addition to comments from ATA, FMCSA heard from seven McKee employees, all of whom supported the waiver. Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety filed in opposition, calling the request “insufficient” and “unjustified.

McKee has a fleet of 300 tractors and a staff of 650 drivers, 75.5% of whom have been with the company for at least five years. They transport baked goods from oven to wholesale distributor facilities.

McKee’s application said the drivers often work together in unloading products in their multistop delivery routes.
