May Cargo Dips 0.7% at SoCal Ports
Total container cargo shipments at the Southern California ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach declined 0.7% overall last month, with L.A.’s lower and Long Beach’s higher than a year ago.
Long Beach shipment totals rose 17% year-over-year, while Los Angeles slipped 12%, reflecting changes in port terminals used by some ocean carriers.
The total import cargo, measured in industry standard TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units, rose 1.8% to 631,613, while export shipments fell 3.9% to 301,978 TEUs.
Total May cargo at the two ports, which make up the largest U.S. port complex, was 1.22 million TEUs, including empties.
The increase in imports was 6.9% in May over April, slightly below the 7.8% average over the past 10 years.
