ack Trucks will lay off about 450 workers at its Macungie, Pa., truck assembly plant, the manufacturer announced Friday.

The first job cuts will take place before the end of the year, with the remainder to come in the first half of 2007, Mack said in a statement.

Mack said the layoffs are related to the Environmental Protection Agency’s stricter 2007 emission standards, which take effect Jan. 1 and are anticipated to drive down demand for new vehicles.

The Macungie plant currently employs more than 1,000 people.

Mark is a subsidiary of Swedish truck manufacturer Volvo AB.
