Letter to the Editor: Toll-Free Toll Roads
We in the trucking industry have been hearing a lot about various states wanting to get trucks off of local roads and onto toll roads. Now Virginia is talking about building a new Interstate 81 for trucks and charging them a toll, leaving the cars to continue traveling free.
It would seem to me that since cars outnumber trucks by more than 20 to 1, why not raise the tolls on cars by 5% and let the trucks run free? This would give truckers an incentive to use the toll roads and keep them off local roads.
Trucking is a pennies business. Every extra penny that we must shell out means a penny less in profit. Why can’t the lawmakers understand this?
