Letter to the Editor: Automated Logs
our report that Xora Inc. and Nextel Communications are working together on wireless technology that would enable global positioning system-based automated logs was a source of hope for drivers who would like to someday enjoy a reasonable lifestyle, balancing work and family (5-9, p. 2).
The omission in the hours-of-service rule that requires trucks to have “black box” recorders is a blast on the air horn saying to drivers and companies alike that nothing has changed.
“Do it any way you want” is the real message. Not until “black boxes/automated logs” provide the data for showing compliance with HOS rules will the drivers and companies be compelled to comply. And then maybe the demands on drivers can be considered realistically in terms of their health.
