I do not understand how anyone in the trucking industry can support the North American Free Trade Agreement, particularly where Mexican trucks entering the U.S. is concerned.

How long after Mexican trucks are allowed free access to American highways will big companies relocate south of the border to take advantage of cheaper Mexican wages? One need not look further than the manufacturing industry to see what can happen.

If the transportation bill passes as President Bush and American Trucking Associations want, not only will we have inadequately maintained Mexican trucks on the road, it won’t be long before American equipment will be in the same shape because we will not be able to afford maintenance when we are paid Mexican rates.

I have been in the trucking business for more than 30 years, and I think that this is the biggest threat to my livelihood I have seen.
