Layoffs Rise as Engine Deadline Nears
img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>Diesel engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. joined most other engine makers in announcing layoffs, but executives at heavy-duty truck plants said they expected to keep assembling trucks over the next eight weeks with engines built before the Oct. 1 deadline for lower-emission models.
Officials at Paccar Inc., Navistar International, and Mack Trucks and Freightliner LLC all said their companies would keep installing pre-October engines through October into November.
A sharp slowdown in orders for trucks equipped with post-Oct. 1 engines has already spurred most truck and engine makers alike to plan cutbacks this fall, and some have warned they may let more workers go.
