Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a new 10-member advisory committee to help the Port of Los Angeles reduce carbon emissions and produce a guide for sustainable growth.

Garcetti said at the July 12 event at North America’s largest container port that the committee will help advance his Sustainable City Plan, which sets a goal of increasing the percentage of goods-moving trips using zero-emissions technologies to at least 15% by 2025.

“The Port of Los Angeles is the beating heart of our economy — it should also be a model for how we can balance growth with environmental stewardship to build a sustainable future,” he said.

Garcetti spoke at the Pasha Stevedoring Green Omni Terminal, a $26 million project that is designed to incorporate various zero and near-zero emissions technologies. When completed, the Pasha terminal is supposed to generate all of its energy needs from renewable sources.

Two of the 10 advisers come from a trucking background. James Jack is executive director of the Coalition for Responsible Transportaion, a business group, and Jonathan Rosenthal is a portfolio manager for Saybrook Capital, which owns drayage carrier Total Transportation Services Inc., or TTSI.

The other eight members are associated with environmental groups, marine terminal operators, a longshoremen’s union and the neighborhood of San Pedro, the port’s home.
