The Jacksonville Port Authority said the port moved a record number of containers in fiscal year 2010, its second consecutive year of container growth.

JAXPORT, as the authority is known, said its facilities moved a record 826,580 containers or twenty-foot equivalent units, up 10% from the previous year.

Revenue reached a record $51.2 million, a 6% increase over the $48.4 million previous record, set last year.

The number of vessels calling on the port for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30 rose to a record 1,947 ships, JAXPORT said.

The port handled nearly 519,000 vehicles, up 24% from last year, and remains the No. 2 vehicle-handling port in the nation.

Total tonnage rose 10%, with 8.1 million tons moved, led by breakbulk cargoes such as paper and steel, which jumped 28% to 990,000 tons. Bulk cargoes impacted by the economic downturn fell 11% to 1.5 million tons.
