iTECH: Weaving a High-Tech Security Blanket at U.S. Ports

A number of U.S. ports are implanting advanced technologies designed to make access, egress and cargo clearance more efficient for truckers and more secure for all in the supply chain.

Places where noteworthy developments are in progress include the Ports of Tacoma, near Seattle; Long Beach, near Los Angeles; New Orleans and Jaxport in Jacksonville, Fla.

Completion of the new Port of Tacoma Road and interchange over state Route 509, expected to greatly speed traffic to and from the port, is also paving the way for implementation of pass-through traffic technology.

The new roads are part of the multifaceted Freight Action Strategy for the Seattle-Tacoma (FAST) Corridor. Construction was handled by the port and the Washington State Department of Transportation. They also built new railroad tracks that run parallel to SR 509.
