evotees of Web services believe their concepts can help trucking operations, particularly small and mid-size fleets, efficiently transfer information over the Internet as an alternative to the more demanding and costly EDI system.

Essentially, a company can perform internal, business-to-business and customer communications online, using the common XML Internet language. The company doesn’t have to build new systems from scratch, although buying new software is virtually unavoidable.

Web services are “a new flavor of software technology for combining existing computer services in new ways over the Internet,” Mark Greenwood, president of Innovative Computing Inc., said during the Technology & Maintenance Council’s September meeting in Nashville, Tenn. The integration can be within one business or across many.

It’s a two-way street.
