uto maker General Motors Corp. will cut its North American white-collar work force by as much as 28% in some areas, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Last week, GM warned that 2005 earnings could be 80% below its prior forecast as a result of slumping North American auto sales.

The Journal said it was not clear when the cuts would take place, or the total number of cuts planned.
