Focus Shifts From Cargo Theft to Security, ATA Council Told

SAN ANTONIO — Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, law enforcement agencies have shifted their attention to preventing terrorism and are spending less time on cargo theft crimes, officials told the semi-annual meeting of American Trucking Associations’ Safety and Loss Prevention Management Council.

With limited resources, law enforcement agencies are “pulling back on working property crimes,” said FBI Special Agent Mike Callahn, who said the agency could use additional agents.

Only a few hundred agents nationwide are currently working property crimes, while approximately 7,000 are investigating terrorist threats, he said.
