eavy rains on Wednesday closed 66 miles of highway in Alaska, cutting off the port of Valdez from roadways, the Associated Press reported.

While conditions are expected to improve, AP quoted Shannon McCarthy, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Transportation, as saying that some portions of the highway leading to the port had been washed out and that asphalt was missing in some places.

The port of Valdez is the terminus point for the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, AP reported.
